Plymouth State University received its first visit from a presidential hopeful this week from Republican Robert Haines, who campaigned for two days on the University campus.

Haines decided to bring his campaigning to the sidewalks of PSU on a whim after visiting the Ballot Room in the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, where the first ballot is cast at midnight in the N.H. primaries. He is a veteran to the presidential elections, as the up and coming election will be his fourth consecutive time running.

"I have to admit, I am a politician," said Haines, "I was elected President of my class my junior year of high school and at that point in 1964 I decided I wanted to be President of the United States. I didn't have to shake anybodies hand, I just decided I wanted to be President."

His platform, which could be found on business cards that were kept in a pre-Civil War era 6-shooter holster at his side, contained the solutions to two important issues that our nation is facing; immigration and the Iraq war.

"I will straighten out the immigration issue," he says in a campaign video he posted on Yahoo, "We will just cancel immigration, my national security director. We will take a break from it like we did in the 1920's, for about 30 years. And, we'll solve the war in Iraq, replace the American troops with Iraqis."

The hopeful was at PSU for two days, where he talked to students about religion, bigotry and politics on the sidewalk next to the HUB or stood holding a "Robert Haines for President" sign and an American flag in the center of the Plymouth roundabout.

"Let me tell you this," Haines said when asked about the up and coming election, "The Republicans running this time don't have the intestinal fortitude to run against our sitting President in 2004. In plain language, they didn't have the guts to take him on, but yours truly did."

Haines is also recognized by the Secret Service as a national hero for helping prevent an assassination attempt on former President Clinton in 2004. A video of the account can be seen on Youtube.com under the title "White House Shooting," where he and two others can be seen tackling a man firing an assault rifle at the White House. Haines is the one wearing the cowboy hat.

"If I were elected President in the 2008 elections," Haines said, "I would kneel in prayer and thank the Lord for delivering His promise. After the prayer, I would immediately start working at accomplishing the goals I have set forth on my platform."

Haines also has recorded three episodes of a television show on public television, titled "America: Land of the Free and Home of the Brave." All three episodes discuss with his goals to win the Presidency and find Osama bin Laden.
